Proximity

How close a searcher is to your business, one of the strongest factors in local ranking.

Proximity is the physical distance between the person searching and your business location, and it is one of the three pillars Google uses to rank local results, alongside relevance and prominence. All else being equal, a business closer to the searcher tends to rank higher for that search.

This is why your rankings change as customers move around your service area, and why a GeoGrid shows strong results near your address that fade with distance. You cannot move your building, but you can influence how far your reach extends by strengthening the other two factors, relevance and prominence.

Understanding proximity keeps expectations realistic. You are unlikely to top the map for a search run from across town if a well-optimized competitor sits right there, so the goal is to maximize visibility across the realistic radius your business actually serves.
