GeoGrid vs Traditional Rank Tracking: Why One Number Lies

Traditional rank tracking was built for one kind of search: the national, location-agnostic query. "Best running shoes" returns roughly the same results whether you search from Denver or Miami, so a single tracked position makes sense. Local search doesn't work that way — and using a traditional rank tracker for it produces a number that's confidently wrong.
How traditional rank tracking works
A classic rank tracker picks one location (or none), runs your keyword, and reports a position: "You rank #3 for chiropractor near me." Clean, simple, and, for local search, deeply misleading. It answers from a single point and treats that answer as the whole story.
The trouble is that in local search there is no single story. Your Google Maps position is recalculated for every searcher based on where they are, because proximity is a top-tier ranking factor. One tracked point can't represent an answer that changes across every block.
How a GeoGrid tracks rank instead

Why the single number lies
Consider a real pattern we see constantly. A business tracks "#1 for med spa" in a traditional tool and feels safe. A GeoGrid of the same keyword shows #1 only in the three cells nearest their address — and rank 15+ across two-thirds of the grid, where a competitor across town dominates. The traditional tracker reported the single most flattering point on the map as if it were the whole map.
It fails in the other direction too. A single check might report a mediocre #8 measured from an odd location, hiding the fact that you actually own an entire quadrant of your city. You'd waste effort "fixing" a ranking that's already strong where your customers are.
Either way, one number can't tell you where you win or lose — and in local search, where is the whole game.
What a local rank tracker should measure
A local rank tracker worth using should report:
- Coverage — the share of the grid where you appear in the top 3, not one position.
- The heatmap itself — so you see the shape of your visibility, not just a score.
- Per-point competitors — who beats you, and exactly where.
- Movement over time — the same grid re-run, so you can watch green spread as you improve.
