What Is a GeoGrid Scan? Local Rank Tracking Explained

July 28, 2026 · Himanshu Batra

Search "barber near me" from your shop and you might rank #1. Search the same thing from six blocks away and you might not exist. That's the reality of local search: your Google Maps ranking depends on where the searcher is standing.

Traditional rank trackers give you one number. A GeoGrid scan gives you the truth.

How a GeoGrid scan works

A GeoGrid scan overlays a grid of points — typically 5×5, 7×7, or 9×9 — across a radius around your business. At every point, it queries Google Maps for your target keyword as if a customer were searching from that exact spot, and records your position.

The result is a color-coded map: green where you rank in the top 3 (the "map pack"), yellow in the middle, red where you're invisible.

How to read your grid

  • Green center, red edges — normal. Proximity is a major ranking factor, and your relevance decays with distance. The question is how fast.
  • Red spots inside your green zone — a competitor is beating you in that pocket. Check who ranks there; they're your real rival, not the one across the street.
  • Green stretching further in one direction — your service-area signals (reviews mentioning neighborhoods, categories, posts) are pulling in that direction. Double down or rebalance.

What moves the grid

In rough order of impact for map rankings:

  1. Review velocity and rating — fresh reviews with keywords beat old five-star silence
  2. Primary category — the single strongest lever you control
  3. Profile completeness — photos, services, hours, description, Q&A
  4. Posting activity — active profiles win ties
  5. Proximity — you can't move your shop, but you can widen your relevance

How often should you scan?

Monthly for stable businesses; after every major change (new category, review push, competitor opening) if you're actively working your local SEO. Compare scans over time — the trend matters more than any single snapshot.

MyAds.Guru's GeoGrid scanner runs 5×5 to 9×9 scans from 5 credits, tracks your history per business, and shows competitor names at every point. Run your first scan free with signup credits.
